Southgate Golf Club in St. George, Utah, provided a great mix of heat and challenge for the amateur golfer.
The course, located just off I-15 on the south side of St. George, is a mix of challenge and bliss. I found that the best time to come here is late afternoon/early morning during May-September. Winter time provides year-round opportunities, as St. George rarely experiences freezes, snow, and sub-optimal weather for winter golf. Hence why, many retiree’s find the city, and its course, on par with their needs.
Overall – this course is optimized for a challenge for the amateur and more of a relaxing afternoon trot for the experienced golfer.
18 Holes of Heat and Fun
Holes 1-2
The first two holes at Sungate provide a barrier for one to work out the kinks in their swing or shuffle down a beer before it gets serious.
I used my driver on hole one and 4-iron on hole 2. My recommendation would be to adjust your grip and swing on these holes before coming to the next set.
Tip: Figure out that rhythm early in the course, and you’ll find that sustained timing with your swing, breathing, cadence, etc help you for the rest of the day.
Holes 3-8
If you weren’t already sweating because of the St. George heat, you’d start now. For beginners, I recommend bringing your beach towel for sandtraps and scuba gear to retrieve balls from the many potential pulls and slices into the water hazards.
If you adjust your grip and swing speed properly, play the coursesafe. You can easily go farther and find your placement relatively close to the greens.
I rotated back and forth with my seven iron and nine iron to ensure I wasn’t in full ego mode for off-the-tee performance. I found that clubbing down and playing it safe was more of a better approach than going ham.
Hole 9
Breathe. Tee it high, let it fly.
Holes 10-18
You know that feeling when you zone out and do some repetitive task, much like binge-watching The Office for 2 hours. Yeah, you’ll feel that way on the back nine.
The holes are very much a mirror of each other, slightly elevated with some great views. Relax and have fun; the front 9 was more punishing.
Conclusion
We had a relaxing round of golf at Southgate Golf Club. It wasn’t too difficult, except for a few holes on the front nine.
This course is perfect for beginners, those who prefer to walk than ride, and for a good afternoon with friends.
GO PLAY!
